What is a cleanout?
Cleanouts are usually located on the side of the house or in the basement where your sewer can be accessed to clear out clogs or scope the line. A cleanout is a piece of sewer line that is set up vertically in your home’s yard extending above the surface of the ground. Cleanouts have a smooth angle to connect with the main sewer lines allowing a drain cleaning machine to run, clearing any blockages. Without a cleanout, the only access to the main sewer line is through a toilet. Cleanouts can be opened and closed, allowing an entrance point into the drainage system for clearing blockages, drain cleaning, or camera inspections.
Why Do You Need A Cleanout?
The pipes inside your home are full of all the water and debris that has been drained through the fixtures of your home and toilet. When the plumbing system inside your house gets backed up, the cleanout in your basement will be full with water and sewage. If you were to remove the plug in your basement cleanout while the sewer is blocked up, it will result in all the water and debris being held in your system to forcefully flow back into your home.
Where Are Cleanouts Installed?
Cleanouts are installed in certain fixtures for example; bathroom sink, kitchen sink, laundry room. These fixtures need cleanouts installed at the lowest part of the trap while being located close as possible to the wall where the drain can flow outside.
Installation of a sewer cleanout
Installing a sewer cleanout involves coming into contact with the main line by digging down into the sewer line while clearing all the dirt out of the way. If you need to replace a cleanout inside or outside your basement, we would remove a small section from the old sewer line.
A cleanout is an extremely important, and convenient to have as a part of your sewer system.
